Carrying Forward Mike’s Legacy: Community, Service, and Support for the Navy SEAL Foundation
The Mike Guyer Foundation was created in 2023 to honor the life and legacy of Commander Mike Guyer, a Wells resident and U.S. Navy SEAL whose life reflected service, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to his community. Mike was the type of person who always gave back — whether through his professional service to our country or his generosity at home in Wells.
In the years since his passing, our Foundation has worked to ensure that his legacy lives on. Through our partnership with the Navy SEAL Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3), we’ve raised nearly $100,000 in support of warriors, veterans, and their families. The funds we raise provide strength, resilience, and direct assistance to those in the Naval Special Warfare community, extending Mike’s impact far beyond our small town.
Building Traditions in Wells
Two cornerstone events anchor our annual fundraising efforts:
The CDR Mike Guyer Salute to Armed Forces Game – Each fall, Wells High School football and the entire community come together to recognize and celebrate more than 75 veterans and active duty service members. What started as a tribute has grown into the largest salute to armed forces game in Maine, uniting generations in gratitude.
The Mike Guyer Foundation Charity Golf Tournament – Hosted each October at Sanford Country Club, this tournament blends fun, camaraderie, and purpose. Beyond a great day on the course, it’s an opportunity for supporters to enjoy BBQ, participate in creative contests like the Bottle Bonanza putting challenge, and bid on exciting auction items that make up nearly a quarter of the funds we raise.
More Than Just Events
While the game and tournament are highlights, they are part of something bigger. They are touchpoints where the Wells community — Mike’s home — comes together to honor his memory while supporting the larger Naval Special Warfare family. Each sponsorship, auction item, raffle ticket, and foursome brings us closer to achieving our goal of $66,000 in 2025, a number chosen to honor what would have been Mike’s 66th birthday.
